So this is for people who may wonder where I have been for the last six months. I'm going to preface this by saying that I would prefer "fair-weather friends" and those who would get some sort of schadenfreude to stop here; the former because they don't need to hear depressing things, and the latter for more or less the same reason. Unions
I have been "let go" from my web development job in the Dean's Office because I am now in this crazy limbo of being simultaneously a grad and undergrad student (I don't get my Bachelor's until May, but have been given a 25% TA appointment). Among the reasons for firing me (besides the obvious necessary reduction in availability due to university policies) was that one of the CLAS Deans did not want to deal with COGS. COGS has no jurisdiction over hourly university jobs that don't relate to TA/RA-ships. If it were a food service job, in parking, etc., COGS wouldn't demand a pay increase or any new perks, so why would it be different in an office job? martian_bob and his roommate think that this is something that should be brought up with COGS (btw, I'm not even a member yet: it took a week for the last administrative bits of the grad application to go through) but I'm concerned about the consequences of doing so (not just for me, but also my former supervisor, who told me this, after a discussion with the HR person). Is there a good way to handle this? It's not about the money (I get paid significantly more doing other things) but it is disconcerting that there is this kind of attitude with the highest administrators of the university. Hi World, I know this a lot to ask, but before making decisions on my behalf, maybe you all could, um, consult with me first? ( Rant )Thanks, Andrea Current Mood: annoyed | | Friday, October 7th, 2005 | | 10:00 pm |
There should be more geeky therapists in the world.
Today at the therapist's office, talking about my social anxiety issues: Therapist: You should learn to relax and have fun. Andrea: I don't know what that means. What is it that people do? Therapist: [Sympathetic nod] Well, what do you like to do for fun? Andrea: I spend my Friday nights home alone reading... I'm so lame... The most exciting thing I've done in weeks was have dinner and go see Serenity with a friend and then I went home and slept a lot. Therapist: Hey, that's what I did last Friday, too! Andrea: Wasn't it an awesome movie? Therapist: [Emphatic nod] Yeah, totally. Andrea: Do you have the show on DVD? Therapist: [Sideways look towards the video camera recording our session] Umm... I have obtained a copy... Andrea: Ahhh... [Cheeky, obvious wink and nod] Yes, I see... [awkward silence] Very interesting... And how does that make you feel? Introversion: Wearing iPod headphones with audio off to avoid harassment of other college students at bus stop while knitting. (Speaking of iPod Shuffles...) Social Awkwardness: Feeling amused when sandwich artist assumes facial recognition is from mutual social gathering attendance, not from semi-regular patronage. (Note to self: Do not laugh at people when they say something absurd if they don't know any better.) Pointlessness: Motivational posters on restroom doors. $979.95
This is the cost of repairs on my 12" G4 PowerBook. My 3-year AppleCare Warranty is void until these repairs are made. $1699: This is the cost of a new 12" PowerBook comparable to mine. Current Mood: upset | | Friday, September 16th, 2005 | | 4:06 pm |

Is it better to be irritated than irrigated?
Thanks, cipherpunk for relaying Dr. Jones's nice words about me. It helped offset the mix of negative feelings I had when I got home to find that my stepfather's dog (for the third time) trespassed on my room and urinated on several computer books. Hesitation
My sister passed her Novice Freestyle figure skating test last week. Novice is two levels below that of the skaters who compete in the Olympics. There are 4 jump elements required in the test: a double Salchow, a double Toe Loop, a double Loop, and a jump combination consisting of two double jumps. The Toe Loop is considered one of the easiest jumps, yet for some reason Sarah has had problems executing it well, and generally avoids putting it in her programs, so we were concerned that she would not pass the test. Her primary coach was in Lake Placid on testing day, so one of his colleagues coached her instead. In the practice session, I asked her for advice to improve Sarah's takeoff, which is the part of the jump that looks the wonkiest to me. The coach told us that there was nothing wrong with Sarah’s technique, except that she hesitates: Sarah thinking that her Toe Loop is weak causes her to mess it up, and sometimes fall, and falling so often makes her believe that she can’t do a good Toe Loop. Sarah landed her jump better than I had seen for quite a while that day. Sometimes it takes an objective outsider to remind you that it really is all in your head. | | Tuesday, June 28th, 2005 | | 9:53 pm |

[F-ing Mac] Question for the LJ fairy
Does anyone know how to eject a disk from the optical drive of a 12" PowerBook which has no manual eject button? Apple's "award winning tech support" is not available after 6pm PST. And it's a holiday weekend, so I can't go to the frelling shop where the guy messed up my computer tomorrow, because they're closed. Oh, and nothing found on google worked. Is it possible to receive a Darwin Award for idiotic self-sterilization?
I was shopping for shampoo at the local grocery store today, and saw one of the worst products designed for women ever: the Gillette Venus Vibrance (annoying flash site). The Venus Vibrance is a battery-powered disposable razor. From Gillette Venus website: That's right. With the push of a button, turn on Soothing Vibrations for a whole new shaving experience. You'll feel so pampered. ... The beautiful handle has a soft grip to enhance control. Grooved finger pads help you keep your grip -- even in a wet environment. ... A ball shape at the end of the razor allows a stable, extended reach, even into the most difficult areas. So go ahead and reach. You won't lose your grip. I am thinking of what generally happens when I try to shave my legs or other bits (I accidentally cut myself with the blade when a mysterious breeze enters my bathroom) and what people generally do with long, round, vibrating things (especially in some state of nakedness from the waist down). I have one word in response to this juxtaposition: "Ouch!" The Venus Vibrance also costs a couple dollars more than the regular Venus model. I hope that expensiveness is a good enough incentive for some air headed women to buy them and add a little Clorox to the gene pool (or gene bathtub). [Star Wars] You Know You Live in a Red State When...
Darth Vader says, "Either you are with us, or ... [dramatic pause]" and you are the only one in the theater who laughs. I'm pretty sure my sister was very embarrassed by my mirth, judging by the glare and elbow nudge. I'm still trying to figure out which is a worse line, "You are softer than sand" [paraphrased, Episode II] or "You are beautiful because I am the one looking at you" [paraphrased, Episode III]. Pretty good movie. Naptime. p.s. The management confiscated my laptop during the coming attractions [*], because everyone knows that 12 inch PowerBooks have magical cameras hidden inside them which will make high quality videos for BitTorrent. They also banned lightsabers inside the theater. Yet they allowed Batman, a couple Clown-Hobos, and Gandalf enter. (Mithrandir does an excellent job directing traffic, in case anyone was curious.) [*] My laptop had been stored in its case in my purse for 10 minutes before the security guy yelled at me. Current Mood: amused | | Wednesday, May 18th, 2005 | | 8:12 am |

I <3 Commerce!
My Creative Commies shirts from Giant Robot Printing arrived in the mail today. The silk-screening on both turned out great -- so much better than the iron-ons I have seen from Café Press. The hooded sweatshirt fits me improperly (or I am not used to wearing them) and they took twice as long to ship as advertised. (They blamed paypal for not giving my mailing address, which seems irrelevant because I remember typing my address for their form, not paypal's!) The girl's size tee is about as sexy as copyleft can get (without even breaking out into a Richard Stallman ditty). Definitely $7 well spent ($5 for guys).
